Mass Observation - Recording everyday life in Britain

Recruitment criteria

Photo of young man
Wanted: male writers aged 16-44

Due to high demand we are currently only recruiting male writers who are aged 16-44, living in all regions of the UK except the South East and South West. We do accept applications from people who meet two of the three criteria (for example, we would accept female writers aged between 16-44, living in the North), but due to limited resources we are sadly unable to accept all applicants. Please do not apply unless you meet at least two of the three criteria.

The recruitment criteria will change periodically - please check our website from time to time or join our Friends scheme for regular updates. If you are unsure, please email moa@sussex.ac.uk before applying.

How to join

Please take some time to read the answers to the frequently asked questions. It is very important that you understand that if you send us your writing, most of it will be open for other people to read in the Archive. We have developed careful procedures to protect your privacy and it is essential that you are fully aware of how the Project works.

Fill in our application form

Once you have read the details about taking part, you can fill in our online application form or contact us for a printed version - email moa@sussex.ac.uk or write to us at: The Mass Observation Project, University of Sussex Library, Brighton BN1 9QL.

Once we have heard from you

Depending on our current recruitment policy we will either add you to our waiting list or or send you some registration forms. Please bear with us: we are often inundated with new recruits so there may be a delay in getting back to you.

Further questions?

The project is directed by Dorothy Sheridan, with archive assistant Jessica Scantlebury. If you have further questions about taking part, please contact us at moa@sussex.ac.uk.
