Mass Observation - Recording everyday life in Britain

Post-1981 collections

In 1981, the Archive initiated a new project which set out once again to involve people in the recording of everyday life. We recruited hundreds of volunteer correpondents to write about particular subjects in response to questionnaires called 'directives'.

Researching the post-1981 collections

To read the responses to the questionnaires, you need to visit the Archive. However, the Special Collections website at the University of Sussex provides:

A list of all the directives grouped by theme

A list of all the directives ordered by date

How to become an observer

You can find out what is involved in being one of the volunteer 'observers' for Mass Observation in the Writing for us section of this website.
